Celebrating Shades of Darkness with a giveaway!

Olivia lost it. The stress of the last few days had finally pushed her past the breaking point. She stepped toward Liam and shoved him with everything she had. She was even more furious when he didn’t budge. “You shouldn’t have left me!” she yelled, not sure if she meant tonight or three years ago—probably both…

To celebrate the release of Shades of Darkness , Until Darkness Comes (book1), will be available for free on Amazon from 2/28-3/4! I have twenty digital copies of Shades of Darkness to distribute, and I’m looking for fans interested in reviewing for me on Amazon, Goodreads and B&N. Leave a comment below if you’re interested in being a reviewer! 🙂

Shades of Darkness ~ Excerpt

I’m so excited to have finished Shades of Darkness, Book 2 Redemption Series, that I had to post an excerpt! Sending it in to my editor today! 🙂

I’m attaching a pic of my inspiration for Haden, the new antagonist in my series you’ll love to hate!

Shades of Darkness

Prologue

Three Years Later

“So, is it true?” Haden demanded, grabbing hold of Jace’s arm and pulling him into the tiny supply room tucked away in the back of the bar. He kicked the door closed with the heel of his boot and leaned against the frame to prevent any untimely interruptions. Too long he’d been waiting for this moment, too long he’d been searching for the “sighted” one. “Did you see her? Does she have it?”

Jace looked over his shoulder as if to make sure they were truly alone before answering. Turning back around, he nodded, “Yeah, it’s true.”

“You saw it then? You saw the stone?” Could it possibly be true? Was Immanuel’s Stone actually here, on Earth?

“I saw the stone,” Jace repeated.

“That’s fantastic! Have you told anyone else about it?” Haden stepped closer to his friend, casually sliding his arm around the demon’s heavily tattooed neck.

“No, only you, just like you said. Her warrior nearly killed me, though. I could hardly get close enough to her to see it. You know, for a minute there, I thought you’d sent me on a suicide mission.”

“I did…” Haden growled, grabbing hold of his arm circling the demon’s neck and jerked up with preternatural strength. The crunch echoed through the small room, and Haden released his old friend, watching as his lifeless body sagged to the floor. Shadows poured out beneath the demon, enveloping him in a thick, black mist.

“Sorry about that,” Haden said, stepping over the crumpled heap. “But to rise to the top, soldiers must fall.”

Genesis

(The Great Flood)

Two by two, the last of the animals stepped onto the great ark as the heavy door slammed closed with a resolute bang echoing all the way up to the Heavens.

Angels watched in amazement as the first drops of rain began to fall upon the earth. Before this moment, the world had received all of its life-giving water from underground springs. Rumors of an impending flood had been passing through Heaven and Earth for months, but until this very moment, no one had ever witnessed this phenomenon called rain.

“It has begun,” Tate said, his voice rich with vindication. “God’s wrath will finally rid the world of its evil abomination. Soon, the daughters of Cain will wail in despair, for the Great Flood is upon them.”

“It’s unfortunate the fallen have forced the Father’s hand in this matter. They must realize a lineage of half-breeds would never be allowed to exist.” Unlike his brethren, Liam took no pleasure in knowing what terrible destruction would soon befall the Earth.

“Undisciplined and evil…” Tate grunted as the giant raindrops quickly gathered in strength.

***

Mahala stepped from the entrance of his home as a shadow swept across the land, chasing away the last glimpse of the sun. The woman he’d taken for his wife, Anisa, lay resting in the back room with their newborn son nestled snugly in her arms. Looking into the dark, ominous sky, a profound sense of impending doom washed over him as the first few drops of rain splattered lightly against his face. The crisp floral scent of Heaven touched his nostrils, stirring a deep ache of regret in his chest. As the falling moisture gathered in strength, the low rumble of thunder echoed somewhere in the distance, bringing with it a warning of the wrath to come.

His mind raced, rage and betrayal boiling up inside him. “How could He do this to us?” Mahala snarled, spinning around and storming back into his dwelling. As he entered their bedroom, his exhausted wife woke with a start.

“What are you doing?” Anisa asked, her voice groggy.

He charged forward, and her vibrant green eyes suddenly grew wide with fear. It killed him to do this to her, to their son, but there was no other way. “The boy,” Mahala demanded abruptly, steeling his heart against the grief that threatened to swallow him whole. “Give me the boy!”

“What’s wrong?” Panic filled her voice as Mahala pulled the newborn infant from her arms and wrapped a blanket around him.

The look of confusion and, God help him, betrayal that flooded his wife’s fear-filled eyes, tore his heart out. Each rapid beat crashed against his chest, a stabbing pain that took his breath away. “The end is near,” he managed to rasp past the lump in his throat. Turning away from his beloved and all he held dear in this world, he took their infant and ran into the downpour of cold, drenching rain.

“Mahala…!” his wife screamed. Her terror cut through him like razor blades. “Mahala! Come back!” her broken sobs resonated through the low, growling thunder. It was in that moment Mahala truly died—his flesh would soon follow.

***

Mahala looked down at the small bundle in his arms one last time before walking through the chamber doors of the Dark Court. Stiffening his resolve, he placed one determined foot in front of the other until he stood before the three lords of the underworld. My God, how things have changed… Once powerful, noble warriors, he would have proudly fought beside, and died for, any one of these three.

Now, seated before him in a throne room that stunk of sulfur and rotting flesh, he barely recognized his long-ago comrades, fallen and exiled for crimes of treason against their creator.

“Mahala,” Lorca greeted, his scratchy voice no doubt burned raw from the sulfurous gas hissing through the cracked rocks jutting up behind them. “It’s been a long time.”

In a moment of weakness, he nearly changed his mind. Every muscle in his body screamed for him to turn back and flee this hell. Surely the floods would be preferable to this. But Mahala was not ignorant to prophecy, and to return his son to Earth would be to condemn the infant to certain death.

“Come…tell us, what brings you before the Dark Court, and not empty-handed I see.”

“The Great Flood is upon us.” He looked from Lorca, who seated on the left, to Gahn, who sat on the right, and tried to avoid the piercing gaze of the disfigured abomination positioned in between them. The one whose beauty had once been beyond compare—the one was responsible for orchestrating this cluster fuck that ultimately led to one-third of the angels falling from grace.

“And what do you think we can possibly do about this?” Gahn asked.

“Nothing…nothing can be done!  His will is in motion and we are all helpless to stop it!” desperation edging into his voice.

“So why are you here?” Lorca snapped.

“It’s my son.” Mahala held the small, delicate bundle up before the court. “I seek asylum for my son. The Nephilim race will be wiped from existence unless you save him.”

“And we should care why?” Gahn asked.

“Because…Nephilim are gifted. If given the chance, I am confident my son will serve the Dark Court well. Please, take the boy. If I return to Earth with him, he will surely die.”

The three sat there, motionless, contemplating his request. The seconds dragged by until finally, Gahn stood, stepping down from the throne. “Leave the boy,” he commanded with a dismissive wave of his hand. “The Nephilim shall be granted asylum as you requested.”

Mahala’s relief was short-lived. Dread quickly engulfed him as the ramifications of his actions slammed into him with wrecking force. He’d just made a deal with the devil in exchange for his son’s life—a life he’d just indentured to the lords of the underworld. Yet, unable to bear the thought of watching his flesh and blood die, he placed a kiss on the newborn’s forehead and laid the blanketed bundle on the ground before forcing himself to step away.

A shrill infant cry filled the chamber and Mahala froze. Every instinct inside him raged in protest to the injustice being wrought upon his innocent son. He looked back to see Gahn standing over the child, and thought, if for only a moment, he might have seen a softening in the demon’s coal black eyes as the infant’s pale green gaze stared back at him.

Gahn reached down to pick up the tiny bundle, his long, gnarled fingers circling the infant’s chest. Mahala forced himself to walk out the door, each step carrying him farther and farther from his infant son. He had no choice. This was the only way to ensure survival of the Nephilim race.

Mahala walked through the chamber doors and back to his mortal wife. She’d never forgive him—not for this, and not for God’s wrath which, even now, was pouring down upon them. But even if she did grant him that small mercy before her death, he knew he was to blame, they all were, and no amount of begging or pleading would absolve him of his sins. The fallen had been strictly forbidden to take mortal wives, and the children born of these unions were a cursed race. They had infected God’s beloved, and their day of judgment was finally at hand.

There are few things more romantic than a first kiss…

Hi, everyone, welcome to Romancing the Hop. At this stop, I’m giving away a $25 Amazon gift card. The winner will be announced Sept. 4th. Enter to win by reading this romantic excerpt from my paranormal romance, Until Darkness Comes, and following the steps below.

A guardian angel… A forbidden love… Eternal consequences…

Olivia Norton was born with a gift—a gift heaven has sworn to protect, and hell is bound to destroy. Her perfect world is turned upside-down when two handsome strangers, Max and Liam, step into her life. Olivia soon discovers that her ‘Mr. Perfect’ is actually a perfect nightmare.

The rules of engagement have changed and Liam, Olivia’s guardian angel, is forced to cross dimensional borders or risk losing the woman he’s sworn to protect. Suddenly, thrust into a world unlike anything he’s ever known, Liam isn’t prepared to come face to face with the young woman whose life he holds in his hands.

But nothing is as it seems, and secrets abound that will ultimately force him to choose between two impossibilities. Max will stop at nothing to finish what he’s started, and Olivia is soon plunged into a battle between good and evil. Her very life hangs in the balance as two forces fight to win her heart.

Until Darkness Comes Excerpt ~ First kiss…

Olivia took a brave step closer to Liam and cupped the side of his cheek, forcing him to look at her. “Then who are you? Surely you can tell me that. And don’t you dare lie to me, because I know you’re not normal. I’ve never met anyone like you before. Normal guys don’t act like you. Normal guys don’t look like you, and if they do, they’re usually more like…”

“More like what?” His eyebrow arched curiously.

“More like Max, I guess.”

“Well, I can promise you that I am nothing like Max. More like the exact opposite, to tell you the truth.”

“Why do you hate him so much? At first, I thought it was because he was my boyfriend, and that you were just jealous or something. But it’s more than that, isn’t it?”

“There’s a darkness in him, Olivia. Can’t you feel it?”

“I’m not sure how I feel when I’m with Max anymore. I used to feel…carefree—wild and reckless, you know? But lately, I’m starting to just feel…afraid. Like I’m walking on a tightrope and I’m about ready to fall.”

“I’ll catch you,” he whispered, slowly trailing his fingers down the side of her neck.

Her pulse beat erratically beneath his touch; she opened her mouth to say something, but stopped. Instead, she moistened her bottom lip with the tip of her tongue. His heated gaze fell to her lips and she felt Liam’s resolve snap. A wave of desire blasted into her and a soft groan of defeat rumbled in his chest as he lowered his head, capturing her lips in a tender embrace. His kiss tore through her like fire. What started out as tentative and sweet, quickly escalated to urgent and demanding as a rush of adrenaline flooded her veins. She melted into his arms, her lips fitting perfectly against his, like she was made just for him.

He tasted exactly like he smelled—faintly of cloves, delicious. She parted her lips, aching for more and instinctively he responded to her request as if she’d spoken it. Drawing the kiss deeper, his tongue brushed against hers. The more he kissed her, the hungrier she became, fueling an insatiable fire deep in her core.

Olivia wound her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. She’d never felt more starved and yet completely satisfied as she did at that very moment. He tightened his arms around her waist and pulled her against him, as if he couldn’t get close enough. Her feet left the ground as he molded her to his lean, powerful body.

Time momentarily ceased. She had no idea how long they stood there in each other’s arms as the floor of the boat rocked beneath his feet. The captain’s voice crackled over the speaker, announcing the end of their tour. A reluctant groan escaped Liam’s lips as he broke their kiss and  slowly released her. Olivia stumbled when her feet touched ground and his hand shot out to steady her…

7/22/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by to follow Emily and Silas’ saga in Bonded in Exile. You’re comments are much appreciated. When you’re done reading, check out some sexy pic’s in my post below, Tattoos…Sexy or Cliche? I’m taking a vote 😉

mmmm... I think this could possibly be Silas in Bonded in Exile ;)

Emily bit the thread free from the spool and threaded it through the needle’s eye. “You’re not gonna be able to carry me with that leg.”

“Wanna bet?”

She looked up, meeting his stubborn glare and mimicked his earlier words to her, “This is gonna hurt.” Without hesitation, she stuck the needle into his flesh and began sewing up his leg. She waited for a curse to come spilling out, because he was definitely on a roll with the profanity tonight, but he said nothing-he didn’t even move a muscle.

7/15/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hi everyone! Welcome back to my SSS excerpt from Bonded in Exile. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comments. Have a great day!

“Yeah, inconvenient little talent Riley’s got, huh?”

“Silas, you can’t go anywhere like this–”

“Give me the needle and thread,” he interrupted, holding out his hand impatiently.

“I said I’ll do it,” Emily grumbled, grabbing her mother’s needle and unwinding the thread from the spool as she spoke. “What are we going to do?”

“You’re gonna hurry up and sew my leg before I take that needle and thread from you and do it myself; then I’m going to carry you out of here before this snow gets impassable.”

7/8/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hi everyone, this SSS continues my excerpt from Bonded in Exile. I hope you’re all enjoying it. Thank you for stopping by and leaving your comments. Have a great day! 🙂

A wave of dread swept through Emily, carried in on the heels of the northern wind whipping outside that sent a high-pitched whistle hissing through the air leaks in the cabin. The storm came on hard and fast. Emily glanced out the window and was surprised to see snow falling in an instant blizzard. She didn’t think Silas’ scowl could get any darker, but as he twisted around in the bed to look outside, an oath tore from his mouth in that language she didn’t understand.

“We gotta go, Emily. Riley knows I’m injured, and he’s gonna snow us in; believe me, we do not want to get trapped up here.”

“Wait–Riley’s doing this?”

7/1/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hi everyone! Welcome back to my SSS excerpt from Bonded in Exile. Hope you’re all enjoying it. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment 🙂

“I don’t understand, you just said you heal quickly.” Emily rung the wash cloth into the basin started to scrub the blood off his leg, taking extra care around the stab wound. Silas had a good two-inch laceration to the lateral aspect of his thigh. The wound was gaping open by a half-inch, but at least the borders were well approximated. It wouldn’t be too difficult to close, and he didn’t seem like as a cosmetically conscious individual, so even if her patch job wasn’t stellar, it’d do in a pinch.

“We do heal fast, unless we’re injured with one of our weapons; this dagger is constructed of  Immanuel’s Stone.”

6/24/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Welcome to another Six Sentence Sunday! This week is a continuation of an excerpt from Bonded in Exile. Thanks to everyone who stops by each week to follow along. I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Thanks for leaving your comments 🙂

The scowl on Silas’ face darkened from mildly putout to completely pissed off. “I’m gonna kill Riley,” he snarled under his breath.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” Emily asked, fighting against her rising panic.

“What’s wrong is that my leg is going to be completely fucked for the next week, and we’re rapidly getting snowed in here!”

6/17/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hi Everyone, welcome back to my excerpt from Bonded in Exile. Thanks for coming back every week, and for leaving your comments 🙂

“I said I’m fine, Emily, honestly, I’m not used to having a female dote over me; I can do this myself.” He leaned forward, looked at his thigh, and scowled. His violet eyes flickered up to hers, then over to the knife lying by the door. “Will you please grab that dagger off the floor?”

That odd request had her pulse kicking up a notch. She did a hands and knees crawl over to the knife and handed him the crimson-coated blade.

6/10/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hi everyone, this week continues with my Bonded in Exile excerpt. Thanks for stopping by every week to follow Emily and Silas. Your comments are much appreciated 🙂 Have a great day!

Emily sighed, “Now is not the time to get all hot and bothered. You need all your blood to stay right where it is, coursing through your vital organs, and this massive piece of flesh between your thighs is not one of them.”

“I beg to differ,” Silas teased, his rich baritone voice courted her flesh, snaking over her breasts, between her thighs.

Emily steeled her resolve, trying to salvage her last bit of dignity. “Sit down before you fall down.  I’m telling you, Silas, this is a bad cut; you’re losing a lot of blood.”

5/27/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hey everyone! This week continues my excerpt from Bonded in Exile. I won’t be participating in SSS next week because I’ll be at the Wis RWA conference. Sighing heavily, Silas stood up; his hands went to his waistband, unfastening the button, and Emily looked away when she realized she was eye-level with his crotch. His cock was definitely the last thing she needed to be thinking about right now.

A quick zip and tug, and Silas’ jeans dropped to his ankles. As she examined his leg wound, she couldn’t help but notice, that even at rest, he hung at an impressive length. On her knees, she glanced up to find him staring down at her with a hunger that made him look more predator than angel. “Don’t even think about it,” she warned him.

5/20/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hi everyone! This week continues my excerpt from Bonded in Exile. Thank you all for stopping by every Sunday and leaving your comments 🙂 Have a great week!

Silas reached for Emily’s wrist to help her off the floor. “The bleeding will stop once it’s stitched up; I heal quickly. It’s all right, Emily, you don’t have to do this, you know. I can take care of myself, I do it all the time.”

“No,” she said, pulling her arm back to avoid his grasp, “I’m not wimping out, I’m just saying, I know knife wounds and this is a bad one. Now take you pants off so I can see how deep it is.”

5/13/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hi everyone! Happy Mother’s Day! This week is a continuation from my excerpt, Bonded in Exile. Thanks for stopping by every week and for leaving your comments 🙂

A gelatinous flow of blood covered Silas’ foot where it pooled in his boot. “Umm…Silas?” Emily tried to keep her voice steady. Whether Riley had spoken the truth or not, her heart was having trouble catching up to her head. She had serious feelings for Silas and genuine concern for his health. “You’ve lost a lot of blood here.”

5/6/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hi everyone! Welcome  back to another six from my Bonded in Exile excerpt. Thanks for stopping by and leaving you comments 🙂 Hope you’re all enjoying it!

“Thanks,” Emily said coolly as he put the last strip of tape on her bandage.

“You’re welcome,” Silas replied,  leaning forward to untie the laces of his boots.

“Here,” she said, scooting off the bed, carefully keeping her weight on the ball of her foot as she knelt on the old oak boards in the space between his parted thighs and took the laces from his hands, “let me do it.”

Surprise briefly crossed his face before settling into his typical stoic, emotionless mask. He sat up, his spine rigid as she unlaced the boot of his uninjured leg first and pulled it off, setting it on the floor beside her. She did the same with his injured leg, only this time, a wet, sucking sound protested the removal of the boot as she pulled it free of his foot.

4/22/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hi everyone! Here’s another six from my Bonded in Exile excerpt. So glad you’re all enjoying it. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment 🙂

Silas limped into the kitchen, calling over his shoulder, “You got a sewing kit in here?”

Emily frowned. “In the pantry on the shelf, there’s a little sewing kit in there. Uhh…Silas, you’re not going to stitch my foot up with that. I mean, I’m no wimp, but that’s a bit too hard-core for me. Not to mention terribly unsanitary.”
